CHAPTER SEVEN

The rest of the weekend passed slowly for Trey. He spent his waking hours divided between worry for Sarah and fear over the possible discovery by some random homeless person of the bodies upstairs. Sleep offered no reprieve with one gruesome dream following another. His brain would cook up an alternate version of reality where it was Sarah’s blood on his hands instead of Kayla’s and he would wake in a cold sweat, heart racing, barely able to restrain himself from running to make sure she was okay.

Monday morning at four am found Trey at the all night Kwik-E-Mart around the corner from the apartment building. He nodded at the clerk, a pale eyed young man in a yellow shirt, as he walked through the door and down the nearest aisle.

Trey wasn’t really hungry, but he needed something to occupy his hands with, so he strolled down to the end of the aisle where the chips were. He glanced toward the clerk, who was busy with something behind the counter, then rolled his neck as if to stretch it, when in reality he was checking out the security cameras. The store only had one, situated in the far left hand corner. On the right, a mirror reflected everything going on in the store.

Staring at the chip bags without really seeing them, Trey concentrated on throwing up a mirage. Usually, it wasn’t all that hard for him but today his jittery nerves complicated things. It was these nerves which had prompted him to take this risk so much closer to where he was living than he normally would.

Sweat beaded Trey’s upper lip as he struggled to settle his mind. He’d done this hundreds of times before, a few times on machines much more complicated than a convenience store security camera.

A tight band wrapped itself around Trey’s head, telling him it had worked. The security camera would show only an empty aisle as if he had never even been there. He glanced at the mirror. Fog covered the glass. After a quick check to make sure the clerk wasn’t watching, Trey snatched up several cans of Pringles and tucked them up under his hoodie. Then he walked right on out.

The early morning air was cool against Trey’s face as he walked back to the apartment. Once inside, he lined the Pringles cans up on the counter and stared at them for several moments before choosing the barbeque flavor.

He paced the kitchen as he ate, the can shaking in his trembling hand. Sweat made the fabric of the hoodie cling to his skin. His stomach was twisted up in knots. It hadn’t been this severe when he bonded with Kayla, but he didn’t know if it it was because they were much younger when it happened or if it was because Sarah was human. Or maybe he didn’t really remember. Whatever it was, he hoped it ended soon. He hadn’t felt this out of sorts since coming off the drugs.

Of course, in many ways, it was only going to get worse once the bonding was complete.
